Marseille is on the Jazz in town hour
For the thirteenth edition of Jazz sur la ville, Marseille is getting into jazz time from November 5 to December 7, 2019.
There are rumours here and there that jazz would be old-fashioned music, listened to mainly by people who are getting older and older. We imagine old smoky clubs, the smell of cold tobacco and outdated leather armchairs, cracking vinyl records and past pieces…
Nothing is further from reality. Jazz is constantly living and reinventing itself, classical or alternative, in France, Europe or New York. And in France, Marseille is doing well. The Phocaean city attracts musicians and, as is often the case in its history, is once again a place of mixing, discovery and enrichment. Just as jazz has enriched many musical trends for several decades.
Jazz on the city in all its forms
It is with this desire to offer everyone something to please their taste and desires that this year’s program was once again conceived, with no less than 200 artists to listen to. Novices and experienced amateurs will be able to enjoy all the concerts organised in Marseille, but also in Aix-en-Provence, Salon-de-Provence, Vitrolles, La Seyne-sur-Mer, or Carnoux-en-Provence or La Ciotat.
The organisers have thought of all audiences and have adapted jazz to all tones: concerts, of course, but also photo exhibitions, animation for school children, master classes, conferences… The opportunities to meet jazz will be as diverse as the artists present for this 2019 edition.
Local, French or foreign, nuggets to discover or confirmed artists coming to present their latest albums, jazz will also be mixed with other world music: punk, funk, classical, electro, pop, Brazilian music…
Surprises and artistic proposals staggered in the continuity of a music that never stops exploring the possibilities since its creation. A music that aims to stimulate freedom of expression, encourage creations and creations… In short, a true “world music”, as Marseille is the crossroads of civilizations.
Jazz sur la ville will start in November on Sunday the 5th, with three events on the same day:
- A musical opening, a documentary screening on Michel Petrucciani, a genius pianist, at the Marseille Alcázar library at 5pm
- a tribute to Michel Petrucciani following the screening, by Alexis Tcholakian Trio, still at the Alcazar trinket, at 6:30 pm;
- the concert of The Yellbows, at the IMPF in Salon-de-Provence at 8pm.
